Some timber is chosen for its appearance. Azobe is chosen when a project calls for weight, strength and durability. Known in international trade as Azobe, Ekki or Bongossi, this African hardwood is widely considered for demanding outdoor and industrial applications.
The photographs show AZOBE sawn timber in bundled packs, with the natural reddish-brown colour visible across the boards. For importers, contractors and manufacturers, the right specification starts with the intended use: the dimensions, grade, moisture condition and exposure all matter.

Azobe comes from Lophira alata. Its heartwood ranges from dark red to purplish brown, often with pale deposits in the pores. It is exceptionally dense, and its natural durability makes it a practical option for work exposed to weather, ground contact or water.
Depending on the project and local standards, Azobe is used for bridge components, hydraulic and marine works, heavy-duty flooring, railway sleepers, poles and other robust outdoor structures. The exact performance required should guide the grade and dimensions. For marine use, conditions matter: resistance to marine borers is lower in tropical waters than in temperate waters.
Azobe is hard and has an interlocked grain. This helps explain its reputation for demanding service, but it also means sawing and machining require suitable equipment and sharp, durable tooling. Pilot holes are generally advisable before nailing or screwing.
Drying is slow and can bring a risk of checking or distortion, especially in thicker sections. Buyers should specify the moisture condition they need and confirm that it suits the final application. If the timber will remain in a wet or exposed setting, detailing and installation should be planned for that environment.
