This is a question we are asked every day.
The answer is not simple—each wood species has its own strengths. But for furniture manufacturers, flooring producers, and timber importers, the key is not which one is “absolutely better,” but which one is better suited to your product, budget, and processing requirements.
Today, we compare Sapelli and Mahogany across seven core dimensions, and explain why Sapelli is increasingly replacing Mahogany as the preferred choice for high value and high performance.
Property | Sapelli | Mahogany (Swietenia) |
Janka Hardness | 1,360–1,500 lbf | approx. 900 lbf |
Air-Dried Density | approx. 640 kg/m³ | approx. 560 kg/m³ |
Impact Resistance | High | Moderate |
Conclusion: Sapelli is about 50% harder than Mahogany, making it more resistant to impact and wear. It is especially suitable for flooring, tables, chairs, staircases, and other high-use applications. Mahogany is relatively softer and more likely to dent or show marks from impact.
Sapelli:
The heartwood ranges from medium to dark reddish brown, sometimes with a slight purple tone. It has interlocked grain, and quarter-sawn surfaces often show a striking ribbon figure, creating a dramatic and premium visual effect.
Mahogany:
Typically light reddish brown, usually with a straight grain and a fine, uniform texture. Its tone is warm and natural, with a more classic and understated appearance.
Conclusion: If you are looking for strong decorative appeal and distinctive grain character, Sapelli is the better choice. If you prefer a cleaner, more traditional appearance, Mahogany may be more suitable. That said, Sapelli’s ribbon stripe figure is especially popular in high-end furniture and decorative veneer markets.

Sapelli:
Because of its interlocked grain, tear-out may occur during planing if the cutting angle is incorrect or the tools are not sharp enough. However, once the right techniques are applied—such as reducing cutting depth and using sharper blades—its machining performance becomes fully controllable. It also performs very well in gluing, mortising, and nailing.
Mahogany:
Mahogany has a more uniform texture and is generally easier to machine. However, it is more sensitive to moisture changes and may be more prone to cracking or distortion in dry environments.
Conclusion: Sapelli requires more attention during machining, but the reward is better end-product performance. Mahogany is easier to process, but its long-term stability is often weaker than Sapelli.

Species | Natural Decay Resistance | Termite Resistance | Resistance to Marine Borers |
Sapelli | Very High | Strong | Strong |
Mahogany | Moderately High | Moderate | Relatively Weak |
Sapelli has a natural durability rating of Class 2 under EN 350, making it suitable for exterior doors, windows, boat decking, and other humid or demanding environments.
Mahogany generally requires additional preservative treatment for outdoor use.
Species | Approx. Market Price for FAS Grade | Value for Money |
Sapelli | USD 6.00–9.00 / board foot | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
Genuine Mahogany | USD 8.00–12.00 / board foot, premium stock USD 14.75+ | ⭐⭐⭐ |
Sapelli is usually priced 25–35% lower than genuine Mahogany, yet offers about 50% higher hardness and stronger durability.
For manufacturers who need to control raw material costs in large-scale production, Sapelli is clearly one of the best value-for-money choices available.

Sapelli:
Sapelli is not listed in the CITES Appendices, so international trade is not restricted in the same way. Supply from countries such as Congo, Gabon, and Cameroon remains relatively stable, and major suppliers are able to support long-term procurement.
Genuine Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla):
This species is listed under CITES Appendix II, meaning exports require permits. Supply is increasingly limited, prices are more volatile, and delivery schedules are often less predictable.
Conclusion: Sapelli offers more stable supply, lower compliance costs, and better suitability for long-term and large-volume purchasing.
Sapelli is widely used for:
· High-end furniture such as dining tables, cabinets, and bookcases
· Solid wood flooring and engineered flooring
· Interior and exterior doors, windows, staircases, and moldings
· Boatbuilding, including decks and cabin interiors
· Decorative veneer and automotive interior trim
· Musical instruments, including pianos and guitars
Mahogany, because of its lower hardness, is generally less recommended for high-wear surfaces such as flooring or tabletops.
If Your Priority Is... | Recommended Choice |
Lowest raw material cost | Sapelli |
Highest hardness and wear resistance | Sapelli |
Dramatic ribbon grain and premium decorative effect | Sapelli |
Outdoor durability and insect resistance | Sapelli |
Stable supply without CITES restrictions | Sapelli |
Uniform straight grain and easiest machining | Mahogany |
Sapelli holds the advantage in most modern commercial applications.
At a lower price, it offers greater strength, stronger durability, and a more visually striking appearance.
That is why more and more furniture manufacturers in Europe, North America, and Asia are shifting from Mahogany to Sapelli.
