In October, Gabon witnessed the arrival of the rainy season as scheduled. The inland areas received rainfall every day, and the entire country remained humid, which slowed down the harvesting process and resulted in a still relatively low overall output.
International buyers remain inactive, not placing a large number of new orders, and the operational level is sluggish.
It is reported that the log storage area in the Ngoko District of the Gabon Economic Special Zone currently holds approximately 35,000 cubic meters of logs, mainly of the Okoume variety, as well as Bosse (also known as African ebony), Sapelli, Padouk, and a small amount of Azobe and Okan.
The focus of attention remains on Oguman, with the estimated inventory amounting to approximately 30,000 cubic meters.
It is reported that the inventory of logs in Zhangjiagang, China, is approximately equivalent to two years' consumption, which is twice the usual consumption cycle. Such a huge surplus of inventory is suppressing China's import demand and putting greater pressure on producers in Gabon.
The sluggishness of the Chinese market has led to the closure of some wood processing factories operated by Chinese enterprises.

Heavy rainfall is once again hitting the region, and it is expected to continue until the end of December. The weather is humid throughout the country, and the speed of logging and transportation of timber to sawmills has slowed down. The overall market sentiment is cautious, with a low volume of inquiries. Operators are maintaining necessary production but have postponed investment and expansion decisions. Additionally, it has been reported that preparations for the EU Import Rules (EUDR) are being expedited. European importers have dispatched auditors to suppliers and provided them with specific due diligence instructions to comply with stricter import rules. It is also reported that on October 27th, the Cameroon Constitutional Council announced that 92-year-old current President Paul Biya won the election for the eighth time with 53.66% of the votes. Previously, to avoid potential unrest, most factories had evacuated in advance by the beginning of September, and it is expected that they will resume production gradually from the end of this month to early November.
The rainy season has advanced from north to south, but logging activities remain at a normal level. The main logging tree species include sandalwood, ayous wood, iruko wood, paduk wood and azobe wood. Demand from China and Europe has both decreased, but the decline in China is more pronounced. The reduction in Chinese orders has forced wood processing factories to turn to the European market, which may lead to the risk of overcapacity, especially for paduk wood. However, the demand for certified products in Europe still exists, but it is highly selective, and the compliance requirements for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the EU Timber Regulation/European Union Timber Rules (EUTR/EUDR) are tightening.

Power shortages have become a hindrance to timber production in Ghana.
Jatropha wood products, especially air-dried jatropha sawn timber, are the main export varieties of Ghana's timber products. The Asian and European markets remain the main markets for Ghana's timber exports.
In the Asian market, the Chinese market is showing signs of weakness, but the import volume from India has significantly increased. In August, India became the largest importer of timber products for Ghana.
The European market is experiencing a transformational opportunity due to the implementation of the FLEGT licensing system, and EUDR compliance may become a new growth point.
