In the global plywood industry, there is one wood species that, although less glamorous than high end hardwoods, moves the largest volumes and serves as a fundamental material – Okoume (Gaboon).
From Vietnam’s export grade plywood to Mexico’s furniture components, and from local panel mills in Pakistan to those in Nicaragua, Okoume consistently holds a major share of plywood core and face veneer applications. Its light weight, uniform grain, and stable processing characteristics make it the “standard answer” for mass production.
But in 2026, the supply landscape for Okoume is changing. This article looks from a plywood manufacturer‘s perspective at why Okoume is irreplaceable, the current market challenges, and how to find a truly reliable supplier.
HONG KONG SENHEDA WOOD LIMITED has over 17 years of experience in African timber exports, with our own factories in Congo and Gabon. We specialize in supplying Okoume logs and FAS grade lumber.

Okoume is not the strongest hardwood, but its overall performance in plywood production is hard to beat:
Lightweight and uniform – Air dry density of only 450–590 kg/m³, meaning lower shipping weight for finished panels. Its uniform fiber structure reduces tearing during rotary peeling, giving high veneer yield.
Light natural colour, easy to veneer – Okoume has a pale yellow to light reddish brown colour with a fine surface. Whether used as a clear coated face or as a substrate for precious wood veneers, it adapts perfectly.
Excellent gluing properties – Okoume’s near neutral pH gives stable absorption of common adhesives (urea formaldehyde, phenolic resin, etc.), resulting in high bonding strength and low risk of delamination.
Short drying time – Compared to many denser hardwoods, Okoume dries quickly, keeping kiln costs low and suiting continuous mass production.
For these reasons, Okoume is regarded globally as the “all round base species” for plywood. It can be found in concrete formwork, packing panels, furniture grade panels, and marine plywood.
Okoume‘s main origins are Gabon and Congo (Brazzaville). In recent years, Gabon has continued to restrict raw log exports and plans to raise the export duty from 8.6% to 12.5%. While Congo is relatively more stable, only suppliers with their own concessions and processing facilities can guarantee long term supply.
Meanwhile, international buyers increasingly require FSC certification and CITES compliance. Small traders without full traceability systems are being phased out. The number of players who can truly supply high quality Okoume steadily is shrinking.
Many plywood mills report that so called “FAS grade” Okoume, when it arrives, turns out to have excessive knots and inconsistent thickness. Such material not only gives low veneer yield but also leads to uneven surfaces after sanding, directly lowering the finished panel grade.
The root cause – Some suppliers do not strictly grade at the source, or they use “mixed grade” to undercut prices, shifting the quality risk to the processor.

We recommend prioritising suppliers that have their own factories and long term concession agreements. HONG KONG SENHEDA WOOD LIMITED operates processing bases in both Congo and Gabon. We do not rely on intermediaries – we control grades and supply rhythm at the source.
A reliable supplier is not afraid of inspection. We welcome customers to appoint SGS, Bureau Veritas or similar agencies to perform on site random checks at the loading port – to verify grade, thickness, etc. before payment.
Our contracts explicitly state: if the delivered grade (as verified by third party inspection) does not match the contractual grade, the customer is entitled to a discount, replacement, or return. This is not a slogan – it is a rule we have followed for years.
Vietnam – As the world‘s second largest plywood exporter, Vietnamese mills use large volumes of Okoume as core veneer for marine plywood and furniture panels. Stable grade and FSC certification are key to accessing European and American markets. We ship to Vietnam every month and can assist with origin certification.
Mexico – Mexico’s furniture manufacturing hub demands high processing efficiency and surface quality. Okoume’s lightness and easy sanding characteristics help Mexican factories reduce tool wear and sanding time.
Pakistan – The local plywood market is highly price competitive, where Okoume’s cost effectiveness shines. We offer flexible small trial orders to help importers quickly test the market.
Nicaragua – One of the fastest growing wood based panel importers in Central America (over 75% growth from 2023 to 2024). Okoume plywood is becoming a major material for construction formwork and furniture panels. We have already set up direct supply channels with first tier Nicaraguan customers.
Kuwait & Lebanon – High rise interior fit out and furniture manufacturing have ongoing demand for lightweight panels. Okoume‘s low weight reduces transport difficulty and installation effort in tall buildings.
Dominican Republic – As a Caribbean plywood trading hub, Okoume panels are further processed and re exported to the US and neighbouring islands. We can provide FSC certification to help customers meet North American market requirements.
Logs – Diameter 60cm+ , length from 5.8m upward, graded to FAS standard, complete CITES export documents.
Kiln dried lumber (KD) – Thickness 50mm (custom thicknesses 25mm, 38mm also available), length 2.4m+, surfaced two sides. FSC certification available upon request.
Shipping – Direct from Pointe Noire (Congo) and Libreville (Gabon). Monthly capacity 200+ containers, serving destination ports including Manzanillo, Veracruz, Callao, Colombo, Jebel Ali and more.
