African Padouk, scientific name Pterocarpus soyauxii, is one of the most eye‑catching tropical hardwoods sourced from the Congo Basin, mainly harvested in Cameroon, Gabon and Republic of Congo. Famous for its striking coral‑red heartwood, Padouk is widely known among furniture factories, flooring manufacturers and musical‑instrument makers across the world.
Freshly cut Padouk shows brilliant orange‑red to deep red colour. When exposed to sunlight and air, the timber gradually ages into elegant purplish‑brown red‑brown tone. This natural colour change is not a defect but a unique feature of Padouk wood. Sapwood is pale creamy‑white, clearly separated from heartwood. Grain is mostly straight, sometimes interlocked, with medium‑coarse texture and natural luster.
In terms of physical performance, Padouk delivers balanced hardness and stability. Its air‑dry density ranges from 0.70‑0.82 g/cm³. After proper drying, it keeps good dimensional stability with low shrinkage risk of warping or cracking. The heartwood owns natural resistance against termites and fungal decay, suitable both for indoor and part outdoor usage.
Padouk works well with common woodworking tools. It supports cutting, turning, polishing, gluing and veneer slicing. Only minor silica content causes slight tool wear, which can be handled in normal production lines.
