Understanding the red colour

African Padouk is commonly associated with Pterocarpus soyauxii. Its heartwood can show striking orange and red tones, turning browner with exposure. That colour change is a natural characteristic to consider when choosing material for visible woodwork. A freshly worked surface and an older exposed surface need not look the same.

The warehouse and container photographs also show why colour should be judged with care. Lighting, camera settings and surface condition affect what appears on screen. If appearance matters to your product, ask for representative close-up photographs or a sample and assess it with your intended finish.

Buying to a usable specification

A bundle photograph gives an overall impression. The next step is to establish what the timber will yield in your factory. Tell us the required rough thickness, minimum usable width and length range, along with any allowance needed for planing and trimming.

Grade should be discussed in the same detail. Sapwood, knots, end splits and wane may affect different products in different ways. An accepted sample or clear reference photograph helps both sides understand the target. Drying condition and any required moisture content should also be confirmed for the lot, rather than inferred from its appearance.

Checking the cargo before shipment

Visible bundle markings provide a useful reference when discussing stock photographs and loading updates. Before shipment, buyers can ask us to relate the offered bundles to the packing list and confirm the agreed sizes and quantity. This makes the discussion more specific than an unidentified photograph of a timber stack.
