“The post at the entrance and the base underneath – they were cut from the same log. I made them with my own hands twenty years ago. Not a trace of rot. Even termites won’t touch it.”
That was an old carpenter in the Republic of Congo, showing me a photo on his phone. The picture was of a wooden house porch, the bottom of the posts buried directly in the foundation without any preservative treatment. He tapped the screen and said: “This is Mukulungu.”
I kept that photo on my phone and never deleted it. Not because the wood is rare, but because it reminded me of a simple truth: some timbers are born to be “friends of time”.
Mukulungu (scientific name Autranella congolensis) is also known as African ironwood or Congolese ironwood. It grows in the Congo Basin, reaching up to 50 metres in height and over 2 metres in diameter – a true giant of the old-growth forest. For years, the name Mukulungu was tied to heavy engineering, docks, hydraulic works, railway sleepers. But recently, more and more designers and furniture makers have started turning their eyes to it – not on construction sites, but in living rooms, dining rooms, stairwells. Why? Because it possesses a very rare ability: it combines extreme performance with genuine beauty.
Mukulungu has an air-dry density of approximately 910–990 kg/m³ (some tests show 0.88–0.99 g/cm³) and a Janka hardness of about 1,040 kgf (approx. 10,230 N) – it belongs to the “very heavy timber” category. This means it resists scratches, impacts and heavy loads. A dining table made from Mukulungu can be finished with just clear oil – no glass top, no plastic film. The marks left by daily use become a unique patina. A staircase made from Mukulungu feels solid underfoot, and will stay that way for decades.
This is Mukulungu‘s most reassuring quality. Its heartwood has natural durability against fungi rated Class 1 (very durable) under EN 350, and its resistance to termites is rated Class D (durable). It is also rated as durable against dry wood borers. More impressively, the natural durability of this wood covers Use Class 5 – meaning it can be used in direct contact with seawater or brackish water without any chemical preservative treatment. That is why Mukulungu is widely used for bridges, docks, lock gates and railway sleepers. Using it for outdoor pergolas, garden furniture or planters is a kind of “luxury overkill” – but you will never worry about having to replace it after three to five years.
Mukulungu has natural resistance to acids, which is why it has been used for chemical plant supports, acid containers and large brewery vats. In furniture applications, this translates into practical value: kitchen countertops, dining tables, wine cellar racks – places that come into contact with red wine, fruit juice, condiments and cleaning agents – it is more “worry-free” than most timbers.
Mukulungu heartwood is reddish-brown with dark streaks, and the boundary between sapwood and heartwood is very clear. Its grain is straight or slightly interlocked, with a fine, uniform texture. After sanding and polishing, the surface has a low-key, understated sheen. It is not a “flashy” wood that catches your eye instantly – but it becomes more beautiful with use, and its lustre deepens over time. That fits perfectly with a “quiet luxury” aesthetic.
Mukulungu has two points to note in processing. First, it is dense and contains silica, which dulls cutting tools quickly. If you want to make fine doors, shaped table legs or complex joinery, you will need tungsten-carbide tooling, reduced feed speeds, and pre-drilling for fasteners. Second, its gluing performance is rated as “correct” for indoor applications – which is entirely sufficient. Use a high-quality structural adhesive and follow the manufacturer‘s recommendations for application, assembly and clamp pressure. At the same time, its finishing properties are very good – whether you choose wax, lacquer or hard-wax oil, the result looks premium.
Doors – A good entrance door must keep out the weather and stand the test of time. Mukulungu’s dimensional stability means it resists warping, and its natural durability means termites won‘t turn it into dust. Paired with brass or stainless steel hardware, a door can last decades, opening and closing smoothly.
Cabinets – The kitchen is an extreme battleground for wood: moisture, grease, heat, acids and alkalis. Mukulungu‘s acid resistance and durability make it a bold and premium choice for cabinetry. The carcass can be solid wood, and the countertop can even be a single slab finished only with hard-wax oil – it becomes more lustrous with use.
Flooring – High density, high hardness, high wear resistance, combined with careful kiln drying and moisture control, make Mukulungu a differentiated option for museums, showrooms, high-end residences and even industrial-chic commercial spaces.
Tables – The greatest appeal of a solid Mukulungu tabletop is that it is low-maintenance. A hot soup bowl can be placed directly on it – no trivet needed. A child draws on it with wax crayons? A light sanding makes it disappear. It is a table that can grow with your children.
Staircases – You walk on stairs every day. Mukulungu‘s density and hardness are so high that after decades of use, there will be no visible wear. The sound underfoot is solid, not hollow.
Outdoor furniture / garden structures – Using it outdoors is “over-specifying”. But that means you never have to worry about it.
Q1: Will the colour of Mukulungu fade?
A: Under normal indoor lighting, the colour of Mukulungu is very stable – it does not change dramatically like some specialty woods. Outdoors under strong UV, like almost all hardwoods, it will gradually weather to a silver-grey. This process does not affect strength or durability – it is simply a natural colour evolution.
Q2: Is it prone to cracking?
A: Mukulungu has a very long growth cycle and is more stable than many species, but no solid wood can be guaranteed “never to move”. Our approach is strict from log opening, drying, conditioning to cutting – we ensure the timber is in an optimal state at delivery. As long as the customer avoids prolonged, extreme dry-wet cycling in use, it will perform with excellent stability.
Q3: Can you provide FSC certification?
A: Yes. We source directly from sustainably managed forests in Gabon, Republic of Congo, etc. Full FSC certification and origin documentation are available.
Q4: What is the minimum order quantity?
