Sapele is a precious tropical hardwood belonging to the Entandrophragma genus of the Meliaceae family. The Meliaceae family also includes other similar woods that can be used as alternatives to sapele, such as Sipo, Kosipo, Tiama, Bosse, and mahogany, as well as African walnut.
With its unique grain, excellent workability, and deep color, sapele has become a popular high-end material for decoration and furniture in the international timber market, and is often praised as a high-quality alternative to "African Mahogany". In the market, it is commonly known as "Ebony" (note: this is a common market name; in strict botanical classification, sapele and true ebony belong to different genera).
The sapele imported in the market is mainly in the forms of logs and lumber, including stock for chopping boards, stock for musical instruments, and large-sized board stock.
Density and Hardness: It is a type of wood with medium weight and hardness. The air-dried density ranges from 0.61 to 0.67 g/cm³.
Strength: It has high strength and excellent mechanical properties.
Drying Shrinkage: It has high drying shrinkage. This means special attention must be paid to control during the drying process; otherwise, it is prone to warping and deformation.
Stability: It has medium dimensional stability after drying.
Durability: It is slightly decay-resistant. The heartwood has a certain degree of resistance to decay fungi and termites, but it is generally recommended for indoor use or for external environments with low risk after anti-corrosion treatment. The sapwood is susceptible to insect damage.
High-end facing: As a top-grade raw material for producing sliced thin wood and rotary-cut veneers, they are applied in furniture veneering, interior decoration (wall panels, door panels), and instrument veneering.
Furniture manufacturing: Used to make high-end furniture (especially antique-style furniture), cabinetry, and fine wood products.
Interior decoration: Applied in wooden moldings, flooring (with attention to stability), stair components, and doors/windows.
Wood-based panels: Used as face veneers for plywood and core/face veneers for blockboards.
Others: Turned products (e.g., handicrafts), ship interior decoration, and light structural timber (with consideration of drying shrinkage and durability).
