It is a large evergreen tree of the genus Guibourtia in the Fabaceae family.

This species belongs to the genus Guibourtia of the Caesalpinioideae subfamily (within the Fabaceae family). Together with its congener Guibourtia coleosperma, it constitutes the main commercial timber categories in Africa. Due to the similarity of its wood grain to that of rosewood, it is often misnamed "African rosewood" or "East African rosewood".
It is concentrated in the equatorial rainforest zone between 5°N and 6°S. Major producing areas include Gabon (accounting for 62% of global reserves), Cameroon (21%), and the Republic of the Congo (12%). Its vertical distribution ranges from 50 to 800 meters above sea level, and it forms dominant communities in river valley alluvial plains.
Due to over-exploitation, the Gabonese government has imposed a logging ban on trees with a diameter of less than 60 cm since 2018. According to the 2020 report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, the annual legal logging volume of this species has dropped to 12,000 cubic meters, with a lumber recovery rate of less than 1%.
The key differences between this species and its closely related species Guibourtia demeusei are:
*For Guibourtia ehie: The black stripes between growth rings are ≤ 2 mm in width and evenly distributed.
*For Guibourtia demeusei: The stripes can reach 5 mm in width and are wavy.
In the market, Guibourtia ehie is often counterfeited by dyeing wood of Morus spp. (mulberry). Identification can be achieved by testing whether there are siliceous deposits in the wood vessels (a feature of Guibourtia ehie but not of Morus spp.).
