The tabletop looks brand new, but the legs crack first – a real headache for many furniture manufacturers and buyers.
A client who makes restaurant furniture once complained to me: “We use very good hardwood for the tabletop, and our customers take good care of it. But within three years, the legs and stretchers start to loosen and crack. The repair cost is almost as high as making a new set.”
I asked him: “What wood do you use for the tabletop?”
“American black walnut.”
“And the legs?”
“…also black walnut.”
There’s the problem.
Most people choose materials based only on what they can see – tabletops, door panels, chair backs. Those parts do need good grain and feel, so black walnut, white oak, or cherry are fine. But the “invisible” parts – legs, stretchers, frames, joinery – are what truly determine a piece of furniture’s lifespan.
Those parts don’t need fancy grain. They need hardness, strength, durability, and dimensional stability.
That’s where Okan comes in – a wood tailor-made for these unseen but essential roles.
Okan (also known as African Oak or Gaboon Oak) is not the kind of wood that wows you at first glance. Its colour is dark, its grain is not flashy. But its physical properties put many “trendy” woods to shame:

· Janka hardness approx. 2,140–2,400 lbf – more than twice as hard as white oak
· Natural durability EN 350 Class 1 (very durable) – naturally resistant to termites and fungi
· Extremely low shrinkage – excellent dimensional stability, resists cracking and warping from humidity changes
In plain words: If you make legs from black walnut, you might need to replace them in ten years. Make them from Okan, and they may outlast your lease.
And Okan is far less expensive than teak, and even quite competitive with many North American species. Using it for the “skeleton” won’t blow your budget, but it will dramatically extend the life of your products.
What “invisible” parts is Okan good for?
· Table legs, chair legs, stretchers, joinery blocks
· Sofa frames, bed frames, load-bearing cabinet posts
· Structural parts for outdoor furniture (water- and insect-resistant)
· Heavy-duty workbench bases, bar counter substrates

Of course, furniture can’t be just a skeleton. It also needs a beautiful “face”.
Ovangkol (also known as African walnut or Ehie) is the one that takes the visible role.
· Air-dry density approx. 0.80–0.90 g/cm³ – solid but not overly heavy
· Janka hardness approx. 1,850–2,150 lbf – much harder than black walnut
· Highly distinctive grain: yellow-brown to dark brown background with dark or black streaks, sometimes cloud- or marble-like
· After sanding and polishing, its surface has a lustrous, high-end feel – almost like the finish on a fine instrument
· Use it for tabletops, door panels, chair backs, armrests. Without complicated finishing, the wood’s natural grain alone can elevate the entire product.
What “visible” parts is Ovangkol good for?
· Dining table tops, desk surfaces
· Cabinet doors, drawer fronts
· Chair backs, armrests, headboards
· Decorative veneers, guitar back and sides

I know an independent furniture brand that specialises in modern Chinese dining tables and chairs. Their product construction is:
· Legs and stretchers: Okan (FAS grade, hidden mortise-and-tenon joints)
· Tabletop: Ovangkol (solid panel, hard-wax oil finish)
· Chair legs and frame: Okan
· Chair back and seat: Ovangkol
· The results?
· Material cost about 15% lower than an all-black-walnut solution
· Durability tested: hammer strikes on the legs leave no marks; chairs remain solid after repeated rocking
· Customer complaint rate – near zero
· Retail price: actually 10% higher than the all-black-walnut version (because “African hardwood” is increasingly recognised as premium in the high-end market)
· This is not an isolated case. More and more furniture makers are realising: using expensive North American species or teak for structural parts is wasteful. Putting Okan in the skeleton and spending the budget on Ovangkol’s grain and feel is a much smarter approach.
Q1: Which is better for furniture structure, Okan or Azobe?
A: Both are extremely hard and durable. Azobe is slightly harder (approx. 3,200 lbf), but Okan’s hardness (2,140–2,400 lbf) is already overkill for furniture. Okan is usually more price-competitive and slightly easier to work.
Q2: Ovangkol vs black walnut – which is better?
A: Black walnut’s strengths are uniform colour, fine grain, and easy workability. Ovangkol is much harder (about twice as hard), has more distinctive grain, and better wear resistance. If you want durability and uniqueness, Ovangkol wins. If you prefer the soft, warm feel of traditional American or Scandinavian style, walnut remains a classic. But their prices are similar, and Ovangkol’s value proposition is becoming increasingly strong in the high-end market.
Q3: Can Okan be used for tabletops?
A: Absolutely, but it is dark and very heavy. If you like dark tones and don’t mind the weight, an Okan tabletop will last a lifetime. However, most people prefer to hide Okan underneath and let the more beautiful grain of Ovangkol show on top.
Q4: Is Ovangkol prone to cracking?
A: It has moderate shrinkage and good dimensional stability. With proper kiln drying (MC 10–12%), the risk of cracking in normal indoor use is very low. For outdoor use, apply a protective coating.
Q5: Can you provide FSC certification?
