Okoume is often described as a lightweight African timber with a pale and uniform appearance. While this is true, it does not fully explain why Okoume has become an important raw material for plywood, furniture, doors, mouldings, interior joinery, and other manufactured wood products.

Wider boards can be allocated to larger parts, while narrower boards can be used for frames, rails, mouldings, and smaller components. When the factory has an efficient sorting and cutting system, different board widths can be matched with different products to improve overall material utilization.
However, random-width timber also requires more planning after arrival. The factory may need additional time for sorting, measuring, and ripping the boards.
The professional purchasing question is therefore not simply whether random-width timber has a lower price. The more important question is whether the factory can efficiently convert the available width distribution into usable components.
FIXED-WIDTH OKOUME: A MORE PREDICTABLE FACTORY INPUT
Fixed-width Okoume is intended for manufacturers that require greater consistency in their incoming raw material.
When boards arrive in agreed widths, factories can reduce sorting and unnecessary ripping. Cutting plans become easier to standardize, material allocation becomes more predictable, and repeat orders can be integrated into an established production process.
Fixed-width supply is especially useful for factories that manufacture the same furniture parts, door components, frames, or mouldings in large quantities. The timber arrives closer to the required production size, allowing the manufacturer to focus more on machining, finishing, and assembly.
This convenience requires additional selection and processing at the sawmill. For this reason, fixed-width and random-width Okoume should not be compared only by their price per cubic meter.

Random-width Okoume may be more suitable when:

DRYING IS ALSO PART OF THE SPECIFICATION
Board width is only one part of an Okoume order. The drying condition must also correspond with the destination climate, manufacturing process, and final application.
Air-dried Okoume may be suitable for buyers that will continue seasoning the timber or have their own drying arrangements. Kiln-dried Okoume provides more controlled moisture conditions and is generally more appropriate for precision machining and indoor wood-product manufacturing.
