Introduction

Okoume, also known as Gaboon, originates mainly from Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and the Republic of Congo in Central‑West Africa. It is one of the most popular commercial hardwood species from Africa, widely exported all over the world. Light weight, good workability and stable texture make Okoume the top‑choice raw material for plywood, interior furniture, boat‑building and packaging industry.

Key Characteristics of Okoume Wood

- Color: Fresh Okoume heartwood shows light pink‑brown to salmon‑red color. After exposure to air, it will gradually turn into golden‑brown shade. Sapwood is pale and not easy to distinguish from heartwood.

- Texture & Grain: Fine and uniform texture, straight grain in most cases. Moderate luster without strong special odor.

- Weight & Hardness: Medium‑light density hardwood. Lower weight compared with many other African hardwoods. Easy to cut, plane, glue and paint.

1. Okoume Plywood

Okoume is world‑famous for plywood manufacturing. Its veneer peels very well. Okoume plywood is broadly used for interior decoration, cabinet backing, wall panels and construction formwork.

2. Furniture & Interior Joinery

Solid Okoume timber and veneers are applied to make indoor furniture, cabinets, doors, window frames and mouldings. It takes stain and paint beautifully.

3. Marine & Boat Building

Thanks to its light weight and decent moisture resistance, Okoume plywood is a classic material for small boat hulls, deck panels and yacht interior parts.

4. Packaging & Pallets

Light weight lowers logistics cost, so Okoume is also used for high‑grade packing boxes and export pallets.

Processing Notes

Okoume machines smoothly. Sawing, drilling, sanding, gluing and staining can be finished without much difficulty.

Suggest kiln‑drying to reach proper moisture content before further processing, which will greatly reduce later deformation risk.

For outdoor usage, extra surface coating treatment is required, since natural Okoume has only moderate decay resistance.

Supply & Sourcing

Most Okoume logs and sawn timber are harvested from Gabon. Logs, sawn boards and Okoume veneer are three main trade forms. Buyers can source logs for local milling or purchase ready‑made sawn timber and plywood.
