The subtle ribbon grain and practical panel-making potential of Dacryodes buettneri.
Some tropical timbers make an impression with deep colour. Ozigo takes a quieter route. Its pale brown to pinkish-white tones can brighten a panel or interior surface, while its interlocked grain creates a surprising touch of movement. This is a timber worth looking at not only for how it appears, but for how it can be made into useful products.
The detail is in the grain
Ozigo (also traded as Assia) grows in western Central Africa, notably Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Its sapwood and heartwood are often difficult to distinguish. On q
uarter-sawn faces, marked interlocked grain can produce a ribbon-like or sometimes moiré figure - a distinctive visual effect in an otherwise light-toned hardwood.

Two paths from the same log
01 VENEER & PLYWOOD Ozigo is particularly well suited to rotary peeling. Veneer can be used in plywood faces and inner layers, making panel production one of its best-known applications. | 02 INTERIOR WOODWORK Sawn material can also serve furniture components, interior panelling, joinery and sheltered stairs when the grade and moisture condition match the project. |
What the Workshop Should Know
The best result depends as much on processing decisions as on the wood itself.
Sawing is straightforward. Tool wear is not. Ozigo generally saws readily, but its silica content can dull cutting edges. Carbide tooling, sharp blades and attention to interlocked grain help reduce rough or torn surfaces. | Dry with care; keep it sheltered. Controlled, gradual drying matters because checking can occur. Its low natural decay resistance also makes untreated Ozigo unsuitable for exposed or persistently damp uses. |
A useful buyer’s checklist
01 / SURFACE | Ask for clear photos of board faces, end grain or veneer sheets. Check colour range, figure, visible defects and grading. |
02 / PROCESS | Confirm product form, dimensions, tolerances and AD/KD condition. Agree on moisture targets and packing before shipment. |
03 / ORIGIN | Check legality and traceability. Export rules differ by country; ATIBT notes restrictions on Ozigo product forms exported from Gabon. |
A detail beyond timber: In Gabon, Ozigo is also known as a fruit-bearing tree, a reminder that its value is not limited to the sawmill.
| AN INTERIOR, NOT AN OUTDOOR CLAIM For a light, calm look, consider Ozigo in protected interior joinery or panels. The image is illustrative only; choose a verified Ozigo installation for publication. |
