Last week, a procurement manager from a Vietnamese customer sent me two photos.
The first: neatly stacked Okoume plywood panels in his workshop – smooth edges, even grain.
The second: an outdoor pavilion at a coastal resort – light structure, warm colour, guests enjoying tea underneath.
He wrote one line under the photos:
“Made from the same batch of Okoume. Core layer and face layer – both Okoume.”
I looked at them for a long time. Not because I was surprised, but because I was moved – Okoume, a wood long defined as “plywood core”, is finally being used where people can see it.

In timber trading, Okoume (Gaboon) has long played a backstage role. Over 80% of global Okoume production goes into plywood cores, hidden beneath veneers – unseen, unnamed, uncredited.
But Okoume actually has many traits that “front stage” woods dream of:
·Light yet strong – Air dry density 450–590 kg/m³, 15–20% lighter than most hardwoods by volume. Lower shipping costs, and lighter structures for garden pavilions.
·Even grain, fine surface – Quarter sawn Okoume shows a light reddish brown colour with subtle ribbon stripes. Apply clear wood oil, and its appearance rivals many mid range decorative timbers.
·Excellent workability – Sawing, planing, sanding, gluing, nailing – every step goes smoothly. Workshop workers love it because it doesn’t dull tools, doesn’t chip, and doesn’t cause headaches.
·Naturally durable for outdoor use – While not as durable as Iroko or Azobe, with proper coating protection Okoume performs well in outdoor pavilions, pergolas, and garden furniture.
That Vietnamese customer told me they used Okoume for the main beams and decking of their pavilion, and it has already survived two rainy seasons. “No one noticed it wasn’t teak, but everyone complimented the colour.”
Almost every plywood customer I’ve served has tried to replace Okoume with other species – some to save cost, some to differentiate. But most of them switched back within six months.
The reason is simple:
1. High rotary peeling yield, stable output
Okoume‘s uniform fibre structure means less tearing during peeling. For the same log, Okoume gives 8–10% higher veneer yield than many tropical hardwoods.
2. Reliable glue bond, works with any adhesive
Whether urea formaldehyde, phenolic resin or MDI, Okoume bonds stably. No glue line failure or poor curing due to pH fluctuations.
3. Low drying cost, short cycle
Okoume dries quickly, with low kiln energy consumption. For a plywood mill, time is money.
4. Light colour, veneer friendly
The pale reddish tone of Okoume core veneer doesn’t show through, so any precious wood face veneer looks clean and true.
In the past, Okoume stayed “hidden inside”. Today, more and more manufacturers are using it “where it shows”.
Not because Okoume has changed, but because the market has changed.
·Teak is too expensive, its supply chain too chaotic.
·Many so called “outdoor hardwoods” are either too hard to work or too unreliable to source.
·End users are beginning to accept a new idea: outdoor furniture and structures don‘t need to be the hardest – they need to be “just right”.
Okoume’s “just right” means: not too heavy, not too expensive, not too difficult to work, not too fragile. It strikes a very practical balance between performance, cost, and aesthetics.

HONG KONG SENHEDA WOOD LIMITED owns its own factories in Congo and Gabon, supplying Okoume logs and FAS grade kiln dried lumber directly from source.
·For plywood – 50mm KD lumber, uniform moisture content, stable peeling performance. FSC certification available.
·For outdoor pavilions and furniture – 25mm, 38mm thickness options, lengths from 2.4m to 5m+. We can also provide outdoor wood oil coating recommendations.
·Inspection and lead time – SGS, BV third party inspection at loading port supported. Standard specifications shipped 15–20 days after contract confirmation.
·Monthly capacity – 8,000 tonnes / 200+ containers. Dual origin supply (Congo & Gabon) ensures no stock out.
If you want to see how Okoume performs in plywood, or test it for an outdoor pavilion, we can send you samples first.
