Millettia laurentii (commonly known as African Millettia), belonging to the genus Millettia of the Papilionaceae family. Its trade name is "Wenge".
It is native to Central Africa. Main sources of supply are the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of the Congo, and Cameroon. It is a large tree, reaching a height of 15 to 18 meters and a trunk diameter of up to 1.0 meters. It is supplied in large quantities.
The heartwood and sapwood are distinctly differentiated, with black circular lines at their junction. When freshly cut, the heartwood is yellow-brown; it oxidizes rapidly to purple-brown and turns black-brown with fine black streaks after long-term storage. The sapwood is light yellow. It is a diffuse-porous wood, with few and slightly large vessels containing light-colored deposits.
The cross-section of the bark shows a reticular sclereid layer; the tangential section presents the typical "wing-pattern" with alternating light and dark shades; the axial parenchyma is well-developed, appearing as vessel-associated banded (slightly forked), and the ripple marks are distinct.
The material is heavy and hard (air-dry density 0.88 g/cm³), has high strength, a large drying shrinkage rate, and a slow drying process prone to minor cracks.
It has strong corrosion resistance, but the processing is slightly difficult: it easily dulls cutting tools, and pre-drilling is required for nailing. The polishing performance is average, but the bending performance is excellent.
Suitable for high-end furniture, interior decoration, solid wood flooring, joinery, carving, sports equipment and thin veneer cutting from softwood.
