As a professional African timber supplier with 17+ years of experience, we have rich experience in handling international L/C orders. Recently, we successfully completed a Bangladesh L/C order and received the final payment smoothly! Today, we share the full process of this order, hoping to help global partners better understand L/C transactions and avoid common risks.

Letter of Credit (L/C) is the most secure payment method for international trade, especially suitable for transactions with new partners or countries with strict foreign exchange control (such as Bangladesh). It is backed by bank credit, ensuring that sellers can receive payment smoothly as long as they provide compliant documents, which solves the core pain point of "difficulty in collecting payment" in cross-border trade.
We first confirmed the order details with our Bangladesh customer, including the specific product information and transaction terms: Specie: OKAN ROUGHLY SQUARE; Quality: Limited sap allowed on one corner; Specification: 150mm (+5) x 125/190/250mm (+5), Allowing 5% 63mm (+3) x 150mm (+5); Length: 2.15m; Free trim: Min. 5cm free trim on lengths; Origin: GABON; Quantity: with a 10% fluctuation allowance on the L/C. Since Bangladesh has strict foreign exchange control policies, the customer proposed to use an irrevocable documentary L/C as the payment method, which is also the most common payment method for Bangladesh imports.
We negotiated the key L/C terms together: the L/C should be issued through a reputable bank (we recommended a well-known foreign-funded bank in Bangladesh to avoid bank credit risks), the payment term is sight L/C (payment against compliant documents), the validity period is 21 days after the latest shipment date, and the place of expiration is in our country (to facilitate timely submission of documents).

After the order contract was signed, the customer submitted the L/C application, contract and other materials to their local bank (issuing bank) and paid the corresponding margin. According to Bangladesh Bank regulations, L/Cs for imports must be documentary LCs, and must specify the submission of signed invoices, certificates of origin and other documents.
The issuing bank reviewed the materials and issued the L/C through SWIFT (a secure international bank communication system) to our cooperating bank (advising bank) in China. This step ensures the authenticity and effectiveness of the L/C, and we strictly reject non-SWIFT LCs to avoid fraud risks.
Our bank (advising bank) verified the authenticity of the L/C and delivered the original L/C to us. We immediately organized a professional team to review the L/C carefully—this is the most critical step to avoid payment risks, and we must ensure that all terms are consistent with the contract and achievable.
We focused on checking 8 key points: whether the L/C is irrevocable, whether the amount, commodity name and quantity are consistent with the contract, whether the validity period and shipment date are reasonable, whether there are "soft clauses" (such as requiring the buyer’s inspection certificate to be submitted), whether the document requirements are achievable, and whether the issuing bank has a good reputation. We found a small discrepancy in the description of the timber specifications and immediately sent an amendment request to the customer. The customer coordinated with the issuing bank to complete the L/C amendment in time.

After confirming that the L/C is correct and compliant, we started to prepare the goods according to the order requirements. We selected high-quality Okoume from Gabon’s sustainably managed forests, inspected the quality strictly, and ensured that the specifications and quantity met the L/C and contract requirements.
During container loading, we followed the professional operation standards to take photos and record the whole process (as shown below), which not only ensures the safety of the goods but also provides effective evidence for subsequent document submission and dispute resolution. The key photos include: truck head photo, container number photo, empty container inspection photo, half-loaded photo, full-loaded photo, container door closing photo, seal close-up photo and full container photo after sealing.
L/C is a "document-only transaction"—banks only check whether the documents are compliant, not the actual goods. Therefore, preparing complete and compliant documents is the key to successful payment. According to the L/C requirements and Bangladesh import regulations, we prepared the following documents:
1.Commercial Invoice & Packing List (signed and consistent with L/C terms)
2.Full Set of Onboard Bill of Lading (issued by the carrier, consistent with the consignee and notifying party specified in the L/C)
3.Timber Origin Certificate & Sustainable Harvesting Certificate
4.Phytosanitary Certificate (for plant quarantine inspection)
5.Other supplementary documents required by the L/C
After sorting out all documents, we submitted them to our bank (negotiating bank) for pre-inspection. After the bank confirmed that there were no discrepancies, the documents were sent to the issuing bank in Bangladesh for verification.

The issuing bank in Bangladesh completed the document verification within 5 working days. After confirming that all documents were compliant with the L/C terms, it paid the full amount (including the final payment) to our bank in accordance with the L/C agreement, regardless of the buyer’s payment status.
Our bank received the payment, deducted the corresponding bank handling fees, and transferred the remaining funds to our company’s account. So far, the entire Bangladesh L/C order was successfully completed, and we successfully received the final payment smoothly!
With 17+ years of cross-border trade experience, we are familiar with the L/C operation rules of various countries (especially Bangladesh) and have a professional team to handle every link:
1.Strict L/C verification to avoid "soft clauses" and document discrepancies, reducing deduction risks
2.Professional document preparation team, ensuring all documents are compliant and submitted on time
3.Familiar with Bangladesh’s foreign exchange control policies and import regulations, avoiding policy risks
4.Standardized container loading operation and photo recording, providing complete evidence chain for transactions
