Trade! If you’re in the wood industry, this Jan 2026 news is a must-read: Canada and China just signed a 5-year wood cooperation memorandum – and it’s set to reshape how we do business, especially for Canada’s BC Province!

For years, Canada’s BC Province has been hit hard by the U.S.’s over 40% tariff on Canadian lumber. Last year alone, a Vancouver Island pulp mill shut down, leaving 350 people jobless – a stark sign of the industry’s pain. As BC’s Forestry Minister Ravi Parmar put it: “Diversifying to new markets is no longer an option – it’s a must.”
This new deal? It’s BC’s lifeline. Signed by three key players – Canada’s Natural Resources Department, BC’s Forestry Ministry, and China’s Housing & Urban-Rural Development Ministry – it’s the first major outcome of Canada’s Prime Minister’s first China visit in 8 years.
Forget low-value logs and pulp – this agreement is all about high-value, future-focused collaboration:
Tall Wood & Mass Timber Tech: The two countries will jointly research and promote modern wood construction (think tall wooden buildings!) for China’s urban renewal and rural revitalization.
China’s “Wood Building(Relaxation)”: Beijing, Shanghai, and Haikou have already lifted height limits on wooden buildings. With China shifting from carbon-heavy steel/concrete to greener options, BC’s engineered wood products (like mass timber) now have a huge new market.
Stable Trade for Canada: In Jan-Nov 2025, Canada was China’s 3rd-largest softwood lumber supplier (942,700 m³), behind Russia (9.45M m³) and Belarus (992,000 m³). This deal will lock in that growth – and push Canada beyond being just a “secondary supplier.”

For Canada/BC: It’s a way to fight U.S. tariffs, upgrade the industry (from low-value to high-value products), and create stable jobs. As BC Premier David Eby said: “This isn’t a quick fix, but it’s the future of a sustainable forestry industry.”
For China: It gets access to top-quality, sustainable Canadian wood to meet its green building goals. Plus, it boosts China’s shift to low-carbon construction – a key part of its environmental plans.
If you’re sourcing wood, working on green buildings, or looking for new partners:
BC’s engineered wood (mass timber, tall wood products) will soon be more accessible in China.
China’s growing demand for wood construction means more opportunities for cross-border collaboration (tech, trade, investments).
For Canada, this is just the start: BC is already eyeing other Asian markets like Japan, South Korea, and India – but China is the first big win.

This deal isn’t just news – it’s a signal of where the wood industry is heading: sustainable, high-value, and globally connected. Whether you’re in Canada, China, or beyond, now’s the time to explore how this partnership can work for your business.
